German 800mm Gun
What is it?
This gun was the largest caliber weapon to be used in combat. It weighed in at a massive 1,344 tons, and had to be moved by a rail car. It stood four stories tall and twenty feet wide. Just to use the weapon a crew of five hundred people was needed. It took thirty minutes to fire a single shot. Why was it made? The French Maginot line, was 1,500 kilometers long and heavily fortified with machine guns, artillery, and tank barriers. Hitler needed to find a way and initially intended to destroy it. He created this weapon to blow through the line in a single shot, and move his troops into France. However, that plan fell through and they simply went through Belgium to get to France. |
